I got married to my husband just last year, it’s amazing how domesticated you become in such a short space of time. And how good at saving! I thought coming together would sort us out financially, but there are so many additional expenses when you get your own place and move in together. One thing I was in charge of was bills. My husband bless him, he’s brilliant at sorting stuff out and providing everything we need you know, but when it comes to stuff like electricity and gas prices, he would just opt for whatever’s put in front of him rather than think about what he is actually paying for. And everywhere I’ve lived, the gas and electricity is just a nightmare. I just wanted to make sure that we did it properly this time – compared gas prices (cos gas is always the real wallet killer) and made sure that we knew exactly what the costs were and what we were paying for, so there’d be no shocks at payment time. So I basically had to call around and get gas prices from a range of suppliers. The problem with that is the time involved – it takes ages to get through to the companies, and how much can you get done in one lunch hour etc. So I tried to figure it out online and came across this comparison site called Energy Helpline. At first I thought they were a supplier themselves, but basically, they just find the cheaper gas and electricity prices for you, compare all the suppliers and tell you which one is the cheapest in your area, which really is a fantastic service, because it saves you having to do all that work yourself. The supplier we got charges us a monthly rate of literally half what we were paying before, and after 6 months they do a meter reading to determine whether you have over or underpaid. And then you make it up, or they do, but knowing that they are the cheapest supplier in my area is fantastic so thanks to Energy Helpline and anyone who hasn’t tried this should. In this recession, cutting costs is imperative!
